    Better Jobs Ontario (formerly Second Career)
    Program Overview:
    Government-funded support for retraining in in-demand jobs.
    Eligibility:
    Unemployed, laid-off, or in unstable work.
    Includes older workers, newcomers, and those with disabilities.
    Must be an Ontario resident and citizen, permanent resident, or refugee.
    Must show demand for the chosen field with good job prospects in Ontario.
    Fast Track for COVID-19 Laid-Off:
    Laid-off after March 1, 2020.
    Focused on jobs in ICT, Life Sciences, Advanced Manufacturing, and Supportive Health Services.
    Targeted at sectors hit hardest by the pandemic.
    Financial Support:
    Up to $28,000 for tuition, books, transportation, living costs, and other instructional costs.
    Extra funds for childcare, disability supports, live away from home and language training.
    Training Programs:
    Short-term (52 weeks or less) programs aligned with labor market needs.

    Many of new comers have recently asked us about the differences between two government-funded education options in Ontario:

    1. Government-funded Better Jobs Ontario
    2. Ontario OSAP Student Loans

    What are the differences? What are the advantages of each? Who is suitable for Better Jobs Ontario? Who should consider OSAP student loans?

    Let’s start with the first question—differences:
    1. Better Jobs Ontario primarily funds courses that are 52 weeks or less. All government funding under this program does not need to be repaid. The restrictions are minimal, and the amount of aid is not related to your bank savings, but rather to your household income during the study period. After completing a BJO program, you can still apply for OSAP courses. The application process is relatively easy.
    2. OSAP Student Loans primarily fund courses that are longer than 52 weeks. Some of the government aid under this program needs to be repaid. The restrictions are greater, and the amount of aid is related to your past household income and bank savings. Within two years of graduating from an OSAP-funded program, you cannot apply for BJO, and the application process is more difficult.
    3. BJO living allowance is strictly for living costs and does not consider other expenses. OSAP living allowances may be used to repay loans or pay for tuition. While OSAP may allow you to attend school without upfront tuition payments, it may reduce or eliminate your living allowance. Overall, BJO offers more personal benefits, while OSAP offers relatively fewer.

    Second Question: Who is suitable for Better Jobs Ontario?
    Generally, those who have worked in Canada, received EI, left their job, are self-employed, or are low-income are suitable for Second Career training because they don’t need to worry about repayments. After graduation, there’s no financial burden, and less pressure. If necessary, you can continue studying with OSAP, and the application process is relatively easy.

    Third Question: Who is suitable for OSAP Student Loans?
    OSAP student loans are more broadly applicable to both those with and without work experience, such as university students or new immigrants. However, since repayments are required, the financial pressure after graduation is relatively higher. In summary, those who are eligible for Better Jobs Ontario should prioritize applying for this repayment-free training program.

    Great News for Canadian Visitor Visa Holders and Accompanying Parents:
    With the government almost completely halting the approval of study permits, individuals on visitor visas and accompanying mothers can choose courses in Canada that are under 6 months and do not require a study permit. The PSW (Personal Support Worker) and Computerized Accounting programs offered by Canada SciTech College are diploma programs that fall under the 6-month requirement, allowing direct enrollment without a study permit. Visitor visa holders and accompanying mothers are welcome to join!

    Unemployed for six months or more: If you haven’t been laid off but have been unemployed for six months or more and belong to a low-income household, you can still apply.
